About BalanceWear®

The BalanceWear® vest is a unique body-worn aid for balance and coordination problems. The vest uses a discrete weight system to provide information to the nervous system, thereby affecting the user’s balance. Flexible weights are placed in the vest using a Velcro system. The vest is easy to wear and there are two models – one with a lumbar belt and one without.

Typical disorders where BalanceWear® can help:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Ataxi
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Apoplexia
  • Neuropathy
  • Elderly people with balance problems
  • Cerebral palsy (including in children)

Adapted specifically to fit you

All BalanceWear® vests products are individually manufactured based on the individual’s measurements and needs. BalanceWear® consists of 2 parts: a front part and a back part. By using Velcro fasteners at the shoulder and waist, it is possible to adjust these parts relative to each other, so that BalanceWear® can be adapted to any bodily changes that may occur over time.

BalanceWear® is produced with a zipper in the front part. The length of zipper can be varied as necessary. It is also possible to get a zipper with a magnetic closure mechanism, which makes it easier to close.

The vest’s exterior is made of black, water-resistant synthetic fabric, which makes the vest easy to keep clean. The inside of the vest is lined with Velcro, to which the necessary weights can be attached.

The weights are available in 3 different sizes of:

  • 227 g
  • 113 g
  • 57 g

Each individual weight is square in shape and covered with black fabric. They are flexible, so they follow the body’s motion.

OW200 (with lumbar belt) consists of 3 further parts:

  • Back orthosis
  • Lumbar belt
  • Front stabilization part

The lumbar belt is closed with Velcro at the front on a smaller front stabilization part. All parts of the lumbar orthosis can be produced according to individual needs. The parts can be individually removed from BalanceWear®.

All the individual components of OW200 are integral parts of the BalanceWear® vest, making it easy for individuals to use BalanceWear® with back orthosis in daily life

A consultation with a BalanceWear® certified physiotherapist usually consists of two consultations. At the first consultation (about 1.5 hours), the patient is thoroughly examined and tested in order to identify their balance problems. The patient then receives a test vest, which is adjusted until the balance is optimally improved. If the patient responds positively to the vest and wishes to buy it, the subsequent consultation will deal with adjusting the individually adapted vest. The vest must be continuously adjusted, initially after about 3 months (this is not included in the sale price).

A period of adaptation should be anticipated after receiving the vest. Patients usually start by wearing the vest for four hours daily – two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon. The vest should never be used at night or when taking a rest.

Several municipalities have provided grants to citizens for the vest under §112 “Statutory instrument on assistance for acquiring aids and consumer goods according to the Social Services Act.” Link
